About The AZMLK Awards

“Calvin C. Goode Lifetime Achievement” Award

This award recognizes exceptional individuals who have made Phoenix a better place to live through a lifelong dedication to promoting social and economic justice, defending civil rights, and enhancing the dignity of all people. Nominations must emulate the lifelong dedication of Calvin C. Goode.

“Living The Dream” Award

This award recognizes individuals who embody the ideas of Dr. King through their continued personal commitment to human relations and social justice.

“Dr. Gene C. Blue Beacon” Award

Celebrating students who demonstrate the principles of scholarship and civic participation and the ideals of hope and possibility lived by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. These students demonstrate a personal commitment to the ideals of Dr. King through participation and leadership in school and community activities.

AZMLK "Drum Major for the Community"

The AZMLK “Drum Major for the Community” recognizes an organization or business that has demonstrated exceptional achievement and commitment to promoting and practicing diversity, inclusion, equity, and access for Phoenix residents.

Mr. George Flores

Calvin C. Goode Lifetime Achievement Award

Mr. George Flores

Mr. George Flores has dedicated over 50 years to championing policies and programs that benefit underserved communities. Serving in executive roles across Phoenix, El Mirage, Glendale, Scottsdale, and Buckeye, he secured millions in funding for human services, economic development, and neighborhood improvement. A passionate mentor, Mr. Flores has guided diverse candidates, including women and minorities, into influential public administration roles nationwide. In retirement, Mr. Flores continues to make an impact. As an Emeritus Member of the Salvation Army in South Phoenix, he played a key role in establishing the Kroc Center, a vital community hub for youth development. He also co-founded the International City Management Association Hispanic Network and the Local Government Hispanic Network, advancing Hispanic and female representation in public service.

With leadership roles in organizations like Arizona Call-A-Teen and the John C. Lincoln-Desert Mission, Mr. Flores’ legacy embodies inclusivity, dignity, and opportunity, reflecting the spirit of Dr. King.

Mrs. Vernell Myers Coleman (posthumous)

Mrs. Vernell Myers Coleman (posthumous)

Mrs. Vernell Myers Coleman (1918–1990) made a profound impact on the Phoenix community through her advocacy for racial equity, social justice, and community building. Known as the “Mayor of the Projects,” she organized a tenants' council at the Matthew Henson Housing Project, addressing substandard conditions and reducing crime, improving life for countless families. Mrs. Coleman also revived Phoenix’s Juneteenth Celebration, earning the title "Mother of the Modern Juneteenth." Her efforts contributed to the city’s decision to make Juneteenth an official holiday in 2022. A champion of community welfare, she helped establish St. Mary’s Food Bank alongside founder John Van Hengel, creating the first food bank in the world and a vital resource in Arizona’s fight against hunger. Despite living with arthritis and using crutches or a wheelchair for over 40 years, Mrs. Coleman remained a mentor and advocate for seniors, youth, and civil rights. Her legacy of love, leadership, and service is still felt throughout Phoenix today.

Ms. Deva Mumphrey

Ms. Deva Mumphrey

Ms. Deva Mumphrey founded “Beyond The Hurt” in 2015 to support single mothers, at-risk youth, and domestic violence survivors. Drawing from her own experience as a single mother of four, she created a nonprofit dedicated to uplifting those in need. Beyond The Hurt offers programs such as a free legal clinic, car seat safety classes, food boxes for low-income families, and the “Pamper Me” self-care initiative. Under Ms. Mumphrey’s leadership, the organization also provides temporary housing for women fleeing domestic violence, free lunches for the homeless, and a community closet offering clothing with dignity. Partnerships with Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Maricopa County Health Department have expanded its reach. She also mentors aspiring female entrepreneurs, championing empowerment and self-sufficiency. Her work embodies Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s values of social justice and community love, making a lasting impact in Phoenix and beyond.

Dr. Samariah Jenohn Riggins, DPT

Dr. Samariah Jenohn Riggins, DPT

Dr. Samariah J. Riggins exemplifies Dr. King’s values of love, courage, and leadership through her commitment to the Phoenix community. A dedicated mentor and role model, she uplifts youth and supports unsheltered individuals with compassion and purpose. In 2022, she launched "Beat the Heat," an annual donation drive providing essentials to unsheltered individuals to prevent heat-related illnesses. Starting independently, she has since partnered with community organizations and businesses, expanding the drive’s impact and hosting events to raise awareness and resources. A decorated leader, Dr. Riggins has been honored as the City of Phoenix’s Outstanding Young Woman of the Year for District 8 and held leadership roles in student government, sports medicine clubs, and honors societies. Her work inspires and celebrates success as a shared victory.

Mr. Jerry McPherson

Mr. Jerry McPherson exemplifies resilience, vision, and a commitment to equity and dignity. After serving honorably in the U.S. Army and pursuing higher education, Jerry brought his dedication to Arizona, where he has made a lasting impact. As Executive Director of the Arizona Commission of African American Affairs (AZCAAA), he advocates for the social, economic, and cultural advancement of African Americans statewide. Jerry has implemented inclusive workforce training programs, breaking barriers in the tech sector, and secured millions in funding for initiatives supporting marginalized business owners. Jerry has also organized COVID-19 testing in underserved areas, secured temporary housing for those in need, and raised over $500,000 for Black-led organizations. Through mentorship of young Black leaders, financial guidance for small business owners, and service on civic boards, Jerry’s dedication to justice and empowerment continues to transform lives.

Ms. Juan Te Dailey

Ms. Juan Te Dailey is a beacon of hope for Arizona’s homeless population with serious mental illness. Inspired by personal experience with her son, she founded Dsquared Homes for the Homeless to address the needs of those often overlooked. Through targeted programs, Ms. Dailey empowers the homeless with dignity and resources. Initiatives like Dignity Bags, filled with hygiene essentials, and monthly Sleeping Mat Weaving events bring volunteers together to foster compassion. The Dsquared GAP program has provided housing assistance to over 100 individuals, transforming advocacy into impactful change. Ms. Dailey’s leadership has built a strong network and partnerships with schools, businesses, and libraries to address systemic gaps. Dsquared’s youth programs teach empathy and civic duty to young volunteers. Honored as Charity of the Year by a local Women in Business Council, Ms. Dailey’s work strengthens the Phoenix community’s social fabric.

Mrs. Donna Williams, Esq.

Mrs. Donna Williams, Esq.

Mrs. Donna Williams, Esq., is a trailblazer for social justice and racial equality, advocating for policies that uplift underrepresented communities. Her open letter to the Arizona Governor inspired the Crown Act, protecting state workers from discrimination based on natural hair textures—a landmark step towards racial equality. As President of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Phoenix Metropolitan Chapter, Donna champions fair housing, livable wages, health equity, and entrepreneurial resources. She launched initiatives like the Green to Gold Mentor program with the Girl Scouts, fostering youth mentorship and success. In her role as Deputy Registrar, Donna has empowered Arizona voters through education strengthening civic engagement. Her commitment to environmental justice includes leading neighborhood clean-ups and planting over 60 trees in South Phoenix, improving community health. Donna’s leadership continues to inspire meaningful change.

Loren Jones

Loren Jones

Loren Jones, a senior at Arizona College Preparatory (ACP) High School, is a scholar, leader, and community advocate. With over 200 volunteer hours at New Vistas Center for Education, Loren has supported students academically and mentored youth facing behavioral challenges. Her dedication earned her the National African American Recognition Award, showcasing her impact. As Chaplain of the Teen Executive Board for the Phoenix Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Loren fosters positivity and respect. She excels academically with a 4.4 GPA, is a National Honor Society member, and a standout athlete, earning varsity letters as a freshman on ACP’s basketball team. Her advocacy has also led to meaningful improvements in her school’s athletic program. Loren’s passion for civil and chemical engineering inspires her goal of creating methane-based clean water solutions to serve underserved communities, combining her dedication to equity and innovation for a better future.

John Davis

John Davis

John Davis, a senior at Eastmark High School, exemplifies service, leadership, and civic engagement. As VP of the Black Student Union, he fosters inclusivity by organizing events and raising awareness about educational opportunities. His leadership extends to roles on the Superintendent Advisory Council, Mayor’s Youth Council, Arizona Governor’s Youth Commission, and Environmental Conservation Committee, where he champions sustainable practices. John’s compassion shines as a para helper for Eastmark’s Unified Sports program, supporting students with disabilities, and as a Student Elections Clerk for Maricopa County, promoting fair voting practices. His "Love John Project," created to feed the homeless on his birthday, has grown into a multi-state and international effort, reflecting his dedication to social justice. Balancing academics with extracurriculars, John excels in honors courses while serving as captain of the E-sports team and shooting guard for varsity basketball.
